Merry Merry [Dec. 26th, 2009|12:33 pm]

airingout
I finally got into the christmas spirit... on christmas eve.  Yesterday, christmas day, I even decorated.

I think we are ready for an upswing.  Things are great and only going to get better.

As I take this week to reflect on the past year and set my goals for 2010,  cancer feels very very far away.  I don't have to go back to the doctor until April!  That is four months away.  I couldn't be more pleased.

Earlier this year I had decided to write a book about my experiences with the big C.  But as time goes on, I feel like I want to put all of that behind me and look forward.  Maybe I'll change my mind.  But right now, my 2010 goals do not include finishing a book proposal about cancer.  My goals this year will be more career, artistic and athletic.

But one step at a time... today.... Today my goal is to hit the stores... I hear there are loads of sales.

logo design & color palettes [Dec. 25th, 2009|02:47 pm]

I was asked by a friend to create something simple for her waxing-salon. She wants it to be gender neutral and clean and simple. I've gone through a couple ideas of trying to incorporate silhouettes of bodies but it seemed impossible to represent a man's hip in such a way that made sense.

Anyway, this is the new design that I've started. I created the letter forms in Illustrator and kinda wanna keep with that feel, but not sure about a color palette. She likes greens and, as previously mentioned, wants it to be gender neutral.

Any other suggestions/ideas, totally welcome! Thanks!!!

ps, happy holidays! :)

Waiting sucks.  The head of my department knows I'm waiting for test results.  I know she means well.  I know she is nothing but supportive.  But to have her stop me in the cafeteria when I'm fixated on nothing but the glorious slice of eggplant parm pizza (ok, two slices) I'm about to eat, it isn't helpful for her to stop me and ask if I've heard anything yet.  I had finally gotten myself to FORGET about it for a few minutes.

The pizza was really good.  Both slices.

I have actually been coping relatively well.  Last night was the first night that I really panicked.  I couldn't help but play out the scenarios.  My heart raced.  I made myself some tea and played stupid games on facebook.

Today I've been focused on Christmas.  I have never been this unorganized two days before the holiday.  I don't even have one decoration up.  I guess it is understandable... the past six weeks have not exactly been easy.

Let's recap... since 11/15, the we've had a few things happen.
Elk broke his finger.
I got hit by a car.
I found out I had a concussion.
Our house got re-assessed for 3 times it's value.
I got a urinary tract infection
We thought loda was going to die.
Elk got the other hand operated on.
I found out I needed a biopsy.
We shoveled out two feet of snow.
I got the biopsy and another urinary tract infection.

----- not the worst things that could happen, but not exactly great stuff.  It's got me bummed out.

Strangely, last year I was MUCH more organized and happy this time of year.  Despite the fact that I was in chemo and working and planning a surprise wedding.

I need to change my attitude.  I need to get into the spirit.  I woke up this morning with a boob that was no longer sore.  I vowed to be happy.

So I'm looking at the good stuff that happened in the past six weeks.
Loda lives strong!
I knit a beautiful scarf while I had the concussion.
It snowed two feet!
I've got to sleep next to the man I love every night.

Life is pretty good.  I really want it to last another 60+ years.

When I get home I'm going to break out the christmas decorations, write out my new year's cards and stand in line at the cheese shop.

January SnB [Dec. 23rd, 2009|09:27 am]

Hello everyone!! I am hosting this January's SnB. It will be on Sunday, January 31, at my apartment in South Philly. There are 2 bus lines that run right by my corner, the subway is 3 blocks away, and there is a whole lot of free parking (for both cars and bicycles).

The limit on this SnB is 10 people--that is how many chairs I own--and maybe slightly more if you want to sit on the floor, but that might get cramped. We'll start the signups with 10 people, and we can up the number if need be.

My boob hurts.

And I woke up with a urinary tract infection.

My boss had to be rushed to the ER yesterday.  I wasn't here but he thought he was having a heart attack.  Turns out it was vertigo mixed with freaking out.  Good news is that he is going to be fine.  I'm really glad he went to the hospital.

My experience in the MRI Biopsy was not as bad as I expected.  In fact, it was infinitely better than last time I had that test in 2005.  Back then, the numbing agent did not work.  The machine was different.  The procedure was slightly different... It was the most painful thing I'd ever experienced.

This time, the machine was new, the numbing agent worked and the doctor was remarkable.  Plus the needle found the lump immediately so there was no re-adjusting and pushing me back into the MRI tube for more pictures five times.  I did get sick when I heard the buzzing noise of the biopsy needle.  I thought I was going to hurl, seriously.  I never throw up but I got clammy and sweaty.  I started yelling but there wasn't anything anyone could do because I was laying face down with my breast in a clamp AND a bunch of needles in it.   I couldn't move.  A nurse rubbed my back and told me to breath deep.  The doctor ordered me into the machine and told everyone to take the pictures "QUICKLY!"  I just kept breathing deep and quickly felt better.  That was as dramatic as It got... which is a very good thing.  I think the body jolts that come with puking would have ripped my breast off.

The doctor left me with her cell phone number if I had any problems.  I should have the results by Thursday.

Run-on sentence of rage [Dec. 22nd, 2009|12:58 pm]

Dear Former Employee:

Why, in the year 2007 A.D., would you design a site as a jumble of image maps and no HTML text, plus popups with necessary information nobody can see cause everything blocks them, plus Adobe GoLive javascript so obsolete modern browsers don't even recognize half of it, and then, as icing on this shitcake, throw away most of the photoshop files?

WHY. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS. DO THE WEB DESIGN WORLD A FAVOR AND JUMP OFF A CLIFF.

In other news, your Dogblog update for the month went up last night and I forgot to tell you!

billing a nonprofit? [Dec. 21st, 2009|12:52 pm]

So, my freelancing book is en-route, but I have a billing question I just thought of that I'd appreciate any advice..

I am billing a nonprofit, which I know means I can't charge them sales tax. I do get charged income tax on this though.. Is it customary to work a proportionate amount of your tax estimates into your billing somehow? Sorry if this is a stupid question, just curious how other people deal with this.

But for my other clients, should I be charging them tax? Am I going to get taxed for this somehow that I don't know about? I've only ever worked with nonprofits so this hasn't ever come up before, but I've had a few this year now. I will be charged taxes on my income..should I be adding this future charge to my statements, or figuring it into my charges in the first place? What do other people do?

Thanks!
